Enter and Leave Your Roof Hatch Safely!

December 15, 2011

Entering and leaving a roof hatch can sometimes be difficult if all you have to grab is the side or body of the roof hatch. Although it’s not code, a simple, inexpensive accessory is available for roof hatches to facilitate easy ingress and egress through the opening.

Roofmaster manufactures a Roof Hatch Grabber Bar. It mounts to all metal roof hatches to provide a safe means for workers to hold on to when entering/exiting through the hatch. It comes with all necessary hardware to mount it to the side of the hatch.

Construction is tubular galvanized steel with an exterior grade exterior-grade paint giving many years of rust-free service. The Grabber Bar fits all sizes of roof hatches.

Keep Your Roof Hatch Openings Safe!

December 9, 2011

Any opening in a roof deck like a roof hatch is a hazard to employees or contractors if left open. Proper protocol is to close the hatch after going up through it, but most times this is not done leaving a dangerous hazard for someone to fall through it. This is in violation of OSHA’s standard 29 CFR 1910.23 and 27 that requires compliance for safe ingress and egress through hatch openings in the roof.

An accessory item is now available to place a safety fence, or rail, around the hatch to prevent accidental falling through the opening. This Safety Guard Rail is clamped around the roof hatch thus eliminating any need for screws or bolts. This also protects the roof deck since nothing is mounted on the roof; it’s mounted on the hatch body itself. A chain is secured across the opening to the roof hatch opening on the safety rail. This system can be easily installed at the time the hatch is installed or years afterwards.

Construction is 1-5/8” OD tubular galvanized steel with an exterior grade powder-coat giving many years of rust-free service. Each safety system is size specific to the roof hatch size. Most typical sizes will fit roof hatch sizes like a 2’6″ x 2’6”, 2’6” x 3’0”, or 3’0″ x 3’0”. Other sizes also are available.

Electrical Contractor Goes Mobile!

November 11, 2011

Roofmaster has been producing its versatile 4-wheel trailer for more than 40-years for the roofing industry. It’s made of 2” heavy-duty steel channel, has wide flotation tires, and can hold up to 2000 lbs. Innovative contractors in many other construction trades have discovered how to convert this material handling equipment with a little customizing to a giant work tool that’s saving them $$$, time and effort!

A Roofmaster customer (industrial supply house) recently purchased nine (9) trailers for one of their customers.  When inquired why they had bought so many trailers, they confessed they had an electrical contractor that bought them regularly for his crews to navigate wire, conduit, and other electrical items around jobsites. The trailers are strong enough to carry any weight they can put on it and feature a 30″ x 60″ deck that can accommodate rear forklift loading. They are also very sturdy (will not tip over), and are narrow enough to go through doorways, go on elevators, and navigate though just about any jobsite. You can also get a trailer with non-flat lite tires so you’ll never have another flat tire on the job!

This contractor welded brackets to unspool wire, hold conduit, boxes to hold electrical supplies, etc. The trailers become mobile toolboxes & workbenches. We also provide bolt-on accessories such as dump hoppers, and barrel holders.

Other trades that have discovered the versatility of Roofmaster’s trailers are concrete contractors, plumbers, drywall (remove the four pegs and easily maneuver sheets of drywall on a flat surface), framers (4’ x 8’ sheets of plywood), landscapers, lumberyards, etc. We also have a larger, 30″ x 72″ trailer that’s great for hauling larger drywall or plywood sheets, and an extendable trailer for longer roll goods.

HVAC Contractor thinks outside the Box!

November 1, 2011

Roofmaster was recently contacted by an HVAC contractor on our PRO400 Platform Hoists. Seems he was looking for something to raise HVAC units up onto roofs (small to medium sizes) instead of having to rent a crane. He had already practically designed his own equipment and was ready to build his own unit when he tried looking online one more time and found our website and discovered our platform hoists would do the job. No sense in reinventing the wheel!

He is now using this hoist to lift HVAC units up to the roof saving him lots of scheduling time (no cranes required), $$$, and installation time. He loads his units onto a sheet of plywood (on to the unit’s fold down forks) and easily sends the equipment up to roof edge. He also bought the Pivoting Converting accessory that allows the unit to make a 90o turn to get it onto the roof much more easily.

Platform hoists have been used in the roofing industry for many years by contractors when roof loading equipment is either not accessible, practical, or too expensive to load for smaller jobs. The PRO400 can lift loads up to 400# as low as 12 ft (28 ft unit), or as high as 40 ft. (44 ft unit). These units can be used indoors (electrical motor version) in warehouses, construction sites, etc., where cranes, forklifts, or other lifting equipment make not be possible, and outdoors (gas engines), to lift materials or equipment to higher elevations.

If you have material or equipment handling issues, contact Roofmaster to discuss your custom problems.

Material Distributors – Your Loaders Also Need Fall Protection!

August 18, 2011

Anchor systems must be used for any heights higher than 7’6” (until 9/16/2011). After 9/16, the height restriction drops to 6’0”. Local OSHA’s (like Cal/OSHA), may or may not use the Fed OSHA height requirements.  However, when facilities are on Indian land or Federal military bases, the federal OSHA regulations supersede local state OSHA and the height regulations in effect at-the-time will be in force.  In California, roofing supply vendors (deliveries) are subject to CA Title 8 3210 (Cal/OSHA uses general industry Standards due to the suppliers SIC code and no contractor’s license) which calls for fall protection trigger height at 7½ feet on all roofs.)

FIRST RULE: Never, ever, tie off your fall arrest kit to a conveyor!!!!! You will be cited immediately by OSHA.

Loaders have been asking if there is an alternate way to tie off & use their fall arrest systems differently than instructed by the manufacturers. Roofmaster has been granted permission to attach the shock-absorber (included in kit) to the hook end of the safety line then run the slider to the harness (see picture).

This gives the loader a little additional freedom to do the loading without having to continually move the slider all the time.

Distributers that load roofs are faced with some logistical problems that need to be addressed. First, who installs the roof-ridge anchor for the loading crew to use? If the distributor has to install it, the roofing contractor has to bear the responsibility of removing it and/or waterproofing it after the job is complete.  Distributors NOTE: Contact your legal counsel to determine liability issues if the anchor system you install for loading purposes is left on the job site.  Distributors & contractors can negotiate who will bear the cost of installing the anchor.

More info on retractables and roof anchors

March 14, 2011

Roofmaster offers a large variety of retractables ranging from 11 feet up to 65 feet. These include the Web Nylon, Edge, Daytona and Aardvark series of retractable lifelines.

Use the Web for very short applications (11’). The Edge comes in 30’, 50’ and 65’ models. It is one of the heavier-duty models, but is a little heavier (due to the heavy-duty feature & metal frame). The Daytona is a newer design than the Edge, is a little less expensive, and comes in 50’ & 65’ sizes. The 65’ is heavy-duty and for the money, is the best value between the two sizes (based on your application needs).

The newest budget-minded model from Guardian is the Aardvark series. The Aardvark comes in 25’ and 50’ lengths. It has been re-engineered to be more compact & lightweight than the other models. One difference with the Aardvark from the other models is if you are going to use the Aardvark with a short anchor, the Aardvark cannot be laid on its side. If you lay it on its side, when you retract it, it may become jammed. The way you avoid jamming, is to buy an additional accessory called an Armadillo (somebody at Guardian must like weird animals).

The Armadillo holds the Aardvark vertically so it will not jam. It also has four casters that allows for full 180o movement on the roofdeck. If you use your Aardvark with a Skymast 3-Man Anchor System, you will not need an Armadillo. See our part # 412350 for details of the Skymast system.

The Skymast system allows for up to three-men to attach three (3) retractables (Edge, Daytona or Aardvark) with 360o mobility on the roofdeck. It mounts on the ridge or on a flat surface. The Skymast is used in conjunction with a Skyhook (base). The Skyhook base comes in a flat base or various pitches. You must order the pitched Skyhooks based on the pitch you’re installing it. The pitched Skyhook is not variable; it is made to the specific pitch of the roofdeck. See various pitches available.

Another anchor (short) that is available is P/N 412362 (Hinged HD Reusable Anchor). This anchor has a HD Ring that can be used on either a flat surface or a pitched surface at any angle. It may be reused repeatedly, many times.

If you want inexpensive disposable anchors, see P/N 412364 or 412366 (Snappy disposables). The Snappy is a disposable anchor (box of 8 or 25) that when you are done using it, just break it off or bend over the anchor and then just tile or shingle right over it leaving it in place. You can attach your retractable or lifeline rope directly to it.

Are You Into Solar??

November 12, 2010

As government regulations change and more people are adding solar panels to their roofs, we receive calls asking what products we have to make installation of solar panels easier and/or cheaper.  A product we’ve been selling for over a year is the brainchild of another product (CommDeck): SolaDeck.

SolaDeck is a prewired roof-mounted base that serves as a roof terminal for the photovoltaic wiring that comes up through the roof from the inside.  It’s available in several models depending on your wiring requirements.  The SolaDeck also provides a waterproof installation base superior to regular roof penetrations using inferior boots or just mastic or caulking to try to seal the wire harness.

UL 1741

UL 50 Type 3R

The unit is low profiled and fits easily under most solar panels.  Additionally, it is UL approved.  Most models are much cheaper than what an electrician could fabricate.  Use of SolaDeck will provide installation consistency on every job and consistent costing.

Roofmaster carries a variety of products for solar panels and solar installations.  Search “solar” at www.roofmaster.com
